The VUCA World
Why must businesses keep renewing and reinventing themselves? Because the world they operate in is fundamentally unstable. The acronym VUCA - Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity - originated in the U.S. military and has become the standard shorthand for the modern operating environment.[2] Understanding VUCA is understanding why standing still is not an option.
Change is fast, large, and unpredictable in pace and scale.
The future is hard to predict; the past is a poor guide.
Many interconnected parts; cause and effect are tangled.
Meaning is unclear; the same facts support many readings.
Why VUCA forces the issue
In a stable world, a business could find a winning formula and repeat it for decades. In a VUCA world, every winning formula has an expiry date - customer needs shift, technologies leap, new competitors appear from nowhere, and entire industries are reshaped. A business that does not continually renew and, when necessary, reinvent itself will slowly (then suddenly) lose its relevance and its resilience.
Which element of VUCA - volatility, uncertainty, complexity, or ambiguity - hits your industry hardest right now? How is it changing what your customers need?
